The most famous definition of self-directed learning was given by Knowles in 1975. “It is a process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without help from others, to identify their learning needs, develop their learning objectives, identify learning resources, select and implement learning strategies and assess their learning outcome” (Knowles, 1975, page 24)
Today’s reality is characterized by rapid social and technological changes. In many aspects of life and work people have to deal with constantly growing environments and therefore being better adapted to changing environments. At my point of view there some advantages and disadvantages in the self- directed and self- motivated learning model. The main advantages are the flexibility in planning; monitoring and access the learning material according to my individual needs and time schedule as well as giving myself more processing time of an idea/thought since we are not required to immediate response to an issue but take time to investigate literature and relevant references in the internet.
The other personal strength in being a self -motivated engaged student is the greatly reduced time of process delivery by teachers while, on the other hand, the facilitation and guidance of learners is being increased. First priority in my personal development is to set my strategic goals. There is a human need to recognize and structure his objectives in terms of where he would like to go what are his short and long term goals. Prioritise them in time and importance order that they need to be implemented.
