Abraham Woodhull Character Analysis

Abraham Woodhull, a farmer in Setauket, played a highly important role in the group. Whenever information was dropped off at the designated dead drop, Woodhull would retrieve it and decide what information was to be sent off to General Washington (“American”). Since it was incredibly dangerous to successfully send information under the radar, Woodhull had to be absolutely sure that the information to be sent was of extreme importance. Woodhull, then, would drop the intelligence off at another dead drop and let Anna Strong, the person in charge of signaling to the transporter, know.

Therefore, General Washington advised the Culper Ring to help spread false information (“George”). For example, “He encouraged members of the Culper Ring to exaggerate the size and strength of his forces in their conversations with British supporters (“George”). This might make the enemy decide to back off a certain area if they thought that a large force would be waiting for them. Similarly, by doing this, the rebels might be allowed more time in order to convey messages to other infantries for more assistance or allow them the chance to gather more supplies.
Another important tactic used by the Culper Ring was the use of mask letters. This would be a seemingly innocent letter; however, it would hold a secret message that could only be observed using a “mask (“Techniques”).” A mask could be a number of different shapes cut out of a material that was of the same size of a piece of paper (“Techniques”). When the intended recipient received the letter, he or she would place the mask over the letter to view the actual message (“Techniques”). Therefore, if the letter was to be intercepted by the enemy, that person would not be able to decode the message without the
