John Smith, he wasn’t a Puritan, but he was one of the early Settlers, in fact, he was one of the most important Settlers of the New World. In 1606, Capt. Smith arrived to the New World with about 144 people. During his adventure to the New World, Capt. Smith was arrested. “During the voyage, probably for lack of tact in explaining to another seasoned adventurer how this venture should be managed, Smith was placed under arrest." (Leary, 290). After the arrival of the colonist to Jamestown, they were ill prepared. They suffered through starvation, disease, and with their weak defenses, the Native attacked and killed many of the Settlers. He believed that all man create equal. “From hence it appears plainly that noe man is made more honorable than another or more wealthy &c., out of any particular and singular respect to himself, but for the glory of his creator and the common good of the creature, man.” (Winthrop). Winthrop used strict orders to show an example of the will of God. Mrs. Hutchison was one the important cases that Winthrop faced in court. She held two public lectures a week in her own house. When the court found out, they charged her with divers matter, and eventually excommunicated her.
Anne Bradstreet was another Puritans who was devoted in a way. She was a poet who suffered during the Puritans era. She suffered the hardship of Puritanism, and she was afraid if she would express her thoughts to the public, she will be banished. She wrote The Flesh and The Spirit. In her poem she wrote two sister arguing between Heaven and Earth. The argument sound more like an argument between Adam and God.
