Thomas Dicke Life in the United States, then and now.
Though most of you reading this have not been alive since the 1950’s, based on books, shows, testimonies and other sources you know that life then is completely different compared to now. In the 1950’s people lived in completely different areas, worked different types of jobs and had completely different hobbies and interests compared to the people of the 2000’s. In this Essay, I will be comparing life in the 1950’s to life currently. I will be dissecting the present/recent past in terms of where people lived, who worked and the types of jobs they held and the amount of leisure time available and the ways this time could be used. The most common jobs were working in assembly lines, farming jobs, steel mills, teachers, bus drivers, plumbers and insurance agents. These jobs were held by men while women stayed at home. Men made way more than women during this time due to the roles of males. The stay at home jobs women had were to cook , clean , decorate , take care of children and take care of their husbands when they returned from worked. Fortunately for the woman later in the 1950’s due to the men being at war they were allowed to join the workforce and began to get real jobs such as a secretary , bank teller , assembly line , clerical worker , sales clerk , teacher and a private household worker. By 1960 twice as many woman held jobs outside the home as they did in 1940. Unlike the 1950’s today each gender may work all types of jobs and receive the same pay. Also the United States hasn’t been at war in decades so the competition for employment today is a lot tougher than in the 1950’s since everyone is free. The most common American Jobs today are things such as being a retail sales person, cashiers, food preparation, nurses and custodial work. Along with the housing and employment of the two generations, next I will cover the leisure time and activities between the two
