Aztec rituals are very different from your modern day religious ceremonies. I am currently on a journey to understand this culture. By using google scholar and google I was able to find sources that will allow me to better understand this culture. While reading and understanding the Aztecs, I will determine whether a source is reliable or not. In this paper I will analyze the following websites: www.ancient.eu/Aztec_sacrifce/ and www.USHistory.org/civ/11d.asp concerning the topic of Aztec Rituals. The article entitled Aztec Sacrifice by Mark Cartwright was not a creditable source. After researching and reading about the author, I was able to see the Mark has no credentials concerning Aztecs. According to his biography he, “Studied Ancient Greek philosophy with a primary focus on Plato.” Over the years, he has, “Widened his interest to include all things Greek including pottery.” Although he has studied many topics, the Aztecs were located in Meso-America; therefore, studies of Greece will not benefit Cartwright when writing about Aztec rituals. After reading the article, I did find the bibliography including sources that related to Aztec Rituals and culture, however, the sources were not credible because they were written by other volunteers on the Ancient History Encyclopedia. While reading about the Aztec Sacrifices, I found myself disturbed by the advertisements that kept appearing on the side of the page. The advantage to these advertisements was the ads were to other…
While other cultures practiced human sacrifice, the Aztec empire is the most well-known and most aggressive group known to have practiced human sacrifice. The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican tribe that lived in the thirteenth century. The Aztec empire only existed for a short time, but left a significant impact, especially in regards to human sacrifices (Tuerenhout 7). The gruesome ritual of human sacrifice has been held as a special religious practice for the Aztecs. The creation stories of the…
history of murder and homicide at all” (Pennock 284). Pennock explains the religious motivations behind the human sacrifices; that “creator gods let blood from themselves to bring life” which “established the reciprocal blood debt” that sacrifice satisfied. She goes on to explain how the public education system helped cement homogenous views of the sacrifices. She also showcases the wonders of the Aztec world, such as the “efficient legal system” and “the huge marketplace” (Pennock 292, 294).…
our society today. As I studied the history of the Mayan civilization, it was interesting to learn what they left behind to be recognized today. They were a group of Indian people that had a great history behind their culture. Throughout their civilization, they endured many struggles, from living situations to fighting for their cultural and legal rights, but throughout their struggles, they also created and left behind many things we use today and many amazing architectural monuments than any…

The Aztecs were not the first people to settle in the area of Mexico and, therefore, it is no wonder that their society and art was influenced by the groups of people before them. There was great number of civilizations that have influenced the Aztec region like the Olmecs, Toltecs, Mayans and Zapotecs. The Aztecs have been the rulling civilization of most Mesoamerica in the 15th and 16th centuries CE with their center in the capital of Tenochtitlan. The art of the Aztecs spead thanks to their…
The Maya Civilization is one almost everyone knows in this day and age. What they do not know, is how long ago this civilization existed. The Maya Civilization can be divided into 3 time periods, preclassic period, classic period, and postclassic period. The total years they existed were from 2000 BC to 909 AD. That is a long time! Firstly, Maya people lived in a vast area; from northern Mexico down south into Central America. The location we now call Guatemala, Belize, and western…
Deer were often utilized in Mesoamerican artwork as a stand-in for humans, most especially in images of sacrificial heart extraction (such as in the Wagner Murals, which utilizes coyotes, or pumas, extracting a deer’s heart as a visual metaphor for sacrifice). Deer are likely seen as a symbol of sacrifice due to their being hunted, which plays out a type of human-animal warfare; a god of hunting is found in the second quadrant. It is possible that animals were also sacrificed, as various objects…
