What is the collision theory
Chemical reaction always involve the collision of particles.
The collision needs sufficient energy to break bonds between particles and form new ones.
The collision needs to be at the correct orientation.
Law of conservation
Total mass of reactants = total mass of products
Acid
Substance that produces hydrogen ions (h+) when dissolved in water
Base
Substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water
Salt
When acid reacts with base, salts are produced
Physical & chemical Change
Physical change - change in the appearance, smell
Chemical change - change in the composition of the substance. A chemical reaction has taken place
Four physical states
(s) = solid
(l) = liquid
(g) = gas
(aq) = aqueous solution (dissolved in water)
Decomposition of a metal carbonate
When a carbonate decomposes, a metal oxide and carbon dioxide gas are produced.
Reaction of metal with Acid
Reactive metal + acid - Salt + hydrogen gas
Acid & metal hydroxide
Acid + metal hydroxide - Salt + water
