Dementia and Delirium
All patients suspected of suffering from dementia should undergo testing for potentially reversible forms of cognitive impairment.2. Patients with dementia commonly develop super-imposed delirium during hospitalization.3. Delirium is common, costly, and morbid.4. The risk of developing delirium can be lowered by identying high-risk patients early in the course of their hospitalization and implementing nonpharmacologic delirium prevention treatments.5. Medication to treat delirium should be used as a last resort, after the patient has been fully examined and a cause found.
Drugs used to treat delirium:1. Haloperidol (typical antipsychotic)2. Olanzapine (atypical antipsychotic)3. Quetiapine (atypical antipsychotic)4. Risperidone (atypical antipsychotic)5. Short to medium acting benzodiazepines: Alprazolam, lorazepam, oxazepam
