how did Stalin manage to overcome his rivals in power by 1929
got rid of rivals. made Trotsky less popular by making him miss lenins funeral (wrong date) and made him lose his important job
put himself in powerful position as general secretary of the party - had power to give jobs so people supported him
clever and excellent organiser. made sure his work kept in Moscow , close to Lenin. spoke at his funeral , made people think he was close to him. stopped lenins testament being read to congress of soviets

state used censorship to make sure that nothing published was anti soviet or Stalin. textbooks had to be approved by state (they praised Stalin and criticised Trotsky)
each new policy like collectivisation or 5YP came with a propaganda campaign
Stalin always photographed with with smiling kids or workers to show popularity
why was censorship important to Stalinist state
Stalin presented himself as lenins favourite
policy of collectivisation made him look more successful
important to control opposition. so he didn't allow freedom of speech
