What are the causes of flooding in Bangladesh?
Causes of Flooding:
- one of the most densely populated countries in the world
- Experiences floods/tropical storms every year
-The Ganges, Maghna and Brahmaputra all had their peek flows at the same time
- The country has a large population of 125million
- Seal level increasing 7mm per year, decreasing gradient of the river, which in turns slows the river, increasing flooding
- Global warming spees up Himalayan snow melt
- Most of the country is less than 1m above sea level
- The country is criss-crossed by thousands of small rivers, creeks and canals.
- Drainage congestion doesn't allow water to escape
What are the impacts of flooding on Bangladesh
Impacts of flooding:
+ replenishes ground water reserves
+provides nutrient rich sediment for vegetable production in the dry season
+ Provides a source for aqua-culture. Fish supply 75% of dietary protein and over 10% of annual export earnings
-Impacts of the floods are more catastrophic than the flood itself- spread diseases
- Building costs and maintenances costs - too high for Bangladesh to afford
