Retribution
Punishment a wrongdoer deserves
This theory centers on the notion of paying people backor giving them what they deserve for something they have done wrong.
Deterrence
Discouragaing or preventing an action , through threat or example of punishment
The threat of the death penalty is assumed to be a strong deterrence to commiting murder
Prevention
Punishing criminals to prevent them from commiting similar crimes
One goal of the death penalty is to ensure that the convicted murder wont murder again
Rehabilitation
Education or training to enable someone convited of crime of reentering society as a productive member
Protection of society
Punishing an otherwise innocent but potentially violent person in order to protect everyone else
