In many parts of the world kids take on “adult” responsibilities at ages, when in other countries they are still protected within their school. Therefore, the age plays important role to define the young learner starting from becoming young learner to the end phase of young learner. A theory of language acquisition about learning language stated that learning language will become natural and easy if the age of children is young, early is better. Children should start learning a second language at early stage in order to help them from the procedure and acquire as much as possible from the foreign language.
Basically, young learners are children who take a new step or level in learning process. Because of they are still young, they have to absorb as many as possible due to take higher level and get more complicated knowledge in the future. 1. Definition of Young Learners
English Young Learners (EYL) is the students from elementary school who have age between 6-12 years old. They are sorting of two groups. They are Young Group (6-8 years old) and Older Group (9-12). While based on their class, it can called Lower Classes student that includes 1, 2, and 3 grades and Upper Class includes 4, 5, and 6 grades.
According to Scott and Ytreberg, the young language learners have divided the children into two main groups; the five to seven year olds and the eight to ten year olds. There are the five to seven year olds are all at level one, the beginner stage. The eight to ten year olds may also be beginners.
2. Characteristic of Young Learners
In the book Teaching English to Children, Scott, and Ytreberg classified children into two main groups. For the first group is five to seven year olds children, and the second group is eight to ten year olds children. All of them have different characteristics.
Eight to ten year olds children are comparatively mature children. They can decide what to learn when the five to seven year olds children cannot. Children like learning something through movements and games, because they like playing and understand physical words more than spoken
