3,181 schools in the United States run on a year-round schedule. This means those schools don’t have a 3-month summer vacation. Instead, students are in school for 45 days then have a 15-day break through the entire school year. With so many schools following this track it is easily assumed that it is a better choice than the traditional system. But, year-round schooling isn’t better. Many experts agree that year-round schooling can cause stress and frustration. This suggests that schools switch back to the traditional schedule. The traditional school calendar is better than a year-round calendar because year-round calendars frustrate teachers and students, are stressful on families and are expensive.

For example, students enjoy summer vacation because it allows them to go outside and take a break from all the thinking and hard work that schools demand. Year-round schooling makes it seem that school goes on forever and that can have a big impact on kids attitudes towards school. Year-round schooling causes kids to experience stress because of a lot of school days and almost no vacations. This causes students get stressed and in some cases dropout. (“NO year-round schooling!”) Even though students get the same number of days off it feels like they are being left out. No kid wants to be in school during July. The kids feel stressed to finish the semester and eager to get outside, and the side effects of this are drastic. Moreover, year-round schooling also diminishes the ability for families to plan vacations and spend quality time together. One example of this is when parents with multiple children split their children into different school districts. This is when one child in a year-round school and another in school that runs on a traditional calendar. This leads to parents struggling to find times during the year when the whole family can travel, or spend time together (Chen). This is commonly called the summer slide. It is suggested that year-round schooling as the answer saying that students fall behind during the summer without practicing essential skills over summer break. Research from a century ago confirms the summer slide was and still is a major problem (Jcarinci). The lack of learning over the summer is causing kids to fall behind. This problem has been going on for a century but, year-round schooling can help kids get back on track. The problem isn’t only that kids are losing knowledge over the summer but how much. According to John Hopkins School of Education's report about the summer slide, most kids lose 2 months of learned skills in math over summer break (Oswald). This just shows that the last 2 months of school were worthless. Kids in year-round schooling will excel because teachers will spend more time teaching the children new things not reviewing prior lessons. On the other hand, a year-round school may prevent the summer slide but there are other options that can stop the summer slide without sitting in a classroom. One of which being a summer learning program like The National Summer Learning Association or NSLA.
