The settlers who came to the region, Yankeedom, started an intellectual movement which initiated the first education system in America. Ever since the beginning of the United States, Yankeedom or New England has always been the region holding the best educational institutions. According to Colin Woodard, “the Yankee settlers come as families and were generally middle class, well-educated, and roughly equal in material wealth”(58). As the Pilgrims and Puritans rode on the Mayflower, on their way to the America’s, each person on the ship signed a treaty formally known as the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was the first written document, stating that each person would understand and listen to each person’s views, lend a helping hand to anyone in need, all in order to create a free, peaceful and cohesive community. In addition to signing the Mayflower Compact, families on the Mayflower brought along books, the Bible and readings from the famous Enlightenment speakers such as John Locke. This was just the start of the new world that the Pilgrims and Puritans were creating. Some of the major ideas of the Puritans and Pilgrims was having religious freedom, a strong and stable education, and complete freedom to establish their own rules. The Industrial Revolution in America was originally founded in Yankeedom, but has continued to spread throughout the whole country, “From 1870 to 1913, the United States experienced an extraordinary rate of growth in industrial output: In 1870 American industries turned out 23.3 percent of the world’s manufacturing production; by 1913 this figure had jumped to 35.8 percent. In fact, U.S. output in 1913 almost equaled the combined total for Europe’s three leading industrial powers: Germany, the United Kingdom, and France.” The United States really proved themselves to be a powerhouse because of their increase in military as well as their technology. When one hears about immigration from European countries, it is common to immediately think about Ellis Island which was the nation 's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 to 1954. Ellis Island had a large role in the Second Industrial Revolution because those who came over, came to seek employment. They were put to work as unskilled workers in factories, which helped factories to produce a large amount of supplies as the work force kept on growing.
