Surtsey is a volcanic island located off the southwestern coast of Iceland. Surtsey is at the southernmost point of Iceland. It is named after the Norse fire god Surtur and is one of the world’s newest islands. It is called Surtur’s Island. Surtsey was formed in a volcanic eruption which began below sea level. When the eruption first occurred, columns of ash were sent into the sky and could be seen for days. The eruption lasted for over 3 1/2 years. Even with the large amount of erosion caused by the pounding seas, the island core quickly solidified as rock. Lava flows formed a shell that helped assure the continuing existence of the island.
