One reason kids need to be taught social skills in class is because they don’t know the fundamentals of a basic conversation. There are a lot more socially awkward kids now than any other time because all kids know how to do is text. texting does not show emotion (besides emojis) and so kids don’t know how to handle when their peers show emotion directly to their face. How many times will people hear “my boyfriend broke up with me over text”, or “she sent that message to me and now I’m not talking to her.” Kids need to know how to have difficult conversations face to face, because that’s what the real worlds like. A boss doesn’t text you that you're fired. People get called into his office and he sits down and talks to them. When kids want to make plans or go on a date, they often text or snapchat each other. This causes much confusion, and since texting doesn’t reveal emotion like talking does, it’s easy to think that someone doesn’t agree with you or is just being plain mean. Kids need to know how to sit down with each other and brainstorm ideas. They need to know how to let down ideas while still being polite. “I don’t think that will work, but it was a good idea.” can be translated very differently depending on the tone that someone is using. It’s very easy to mistake if someone is being sarcastic or sincere via. text. Kids won’t be able to text their boss, “Can I hav a promotion plz? ;D” like they text their parents, “Can I hav ten$ plz?
