Black History Month was chosen to be celebrated on the second week of February because it celebrated the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the African American population. “Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave who became one of the foremost black abolitionists and civil rights leaders in the nation, and President Abraham Lincoln, who signed the Proclamation of Independence…” (Source 1) Both of the infamous men paid great contribution to the exemption of African Americans. It is important that black Americans feel free to celebrate their history and culture without the fear of being criticized.
