She steps up onto the rough, white, starting block for her turn in the relay, and fixes her goggles that are suffocating her face. Kicking and moving speedily across the water. Now she’s nearing the first wall. She flips around and turns, now on the last stretch. Whitney muscles are burning in pain, she’s starting to slow down, and her brain is telling her to stop and just quit, yet she keeps on going. She tells herself “You’re almost there, you can do this.” Thinking of her team, and how much they are depending on her, she keeps on fighting. She’s coming closer to the end and can see the finish. Pushing, kicking, hardly breathing, and trying as fast as she can to get there. Then finally, as though it had taken 100 years, she hits the wall.
Whitney pulls herself out of the pool and her friends and family rush to meet her. They all give her a big hug and tell her about how well she did, and how proud of her they are.
