Many things happen to Ernie, which cause changes to take place. First of all, the text states, “Jack handed the empty packages over with a smile and with that gesture became Ernie’s first friend” (page 72). This quote tells readers that Jack and Ernie have become friend. At this point in the book, Jack is Ernie’s first, and only friend. Then, on page 72 the text states, “Jack had decided to take Ernie downtown for breakfasts every Wednesday morning to ease him into the world outside that of the group home.” This quote tells readers that Jack wanted Ernie to experience the world. By doing this, Ernie would meet new people and see new things. Lastly, the text states, “ … he looked out the window of the Big Boy restaurant towards Stan’s Hardware across the street. There he saw a dark-haired woman in jeans and a black T-shirt unlock the door of the building…” (page 72). This quote tells readers that Ernie saw Delores. This quote also says that the Big Boy restaurant is across the street from were Delores works. This means that every Wednesday when Jack and Ernie go out to breakfast, Ernie will see Delores. In conclusion, in the story “A Crush” the main character, Ernie goes through many new experiences with cause changes. First of all, the text states, “ … and that was the moment Ernie started loving Delores …” (page 72). This quote is telling readers that Ernie loves Delores. After he saw her, he simply fell in love with her. Then, on page 72, the story says, “ ‘Are you sure you want to plant these?’ Ernie was sure.” This quote is saying that because Ernie loves Delores, he is planting his special seeds just for her. Ernie loves his seeds, but he also loves Delores. He is giving up one thing he loves (the seeds) for another (Delores). Lastly, on page 74, the text states, “ Ernie set the clear mason jar full of flowers under the sign that read ‘Closed’, then he smiled Jack and followed him back across the street to get breakfast.” This quote tells readers that Ernie gave the flowers that he grew to Dolores. He left the flowers at the door before the shop opened, so nobody would see him, or what he was doing. In conclusion, in the story “A Crush”, by Cynthia Rylant, Ernie has many interaction and experiences that result in changes. Ernie falls in love with Delores, which caused Ernie to grow his special flowers, which causes Ernie to give his flowers to
