The first example in Bachman and Schutt is in reference to a June 2009 article in the New York Times, an editorial noting that binge drinking by young adults not attending college had significantly declined over a 27 - year period, while binge drinking by the same age cohorts who were attending college had not. This idea was conceptualized through the information that was retrieved from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health concluded that there was something about student who are attending college or living in the college environment that increases the likelihood of binge drinking. Operationalization is the process of specifying the operations that will indicate the value of a variable for each case. Chapter four of Bachman and Schutt used binge drinking as a concept, the frequency as the variable, and the indicator was how often within the past two week did a person consume five or more alcoholic drinks in a row.
