Dancing requires working and communicating with others. When creating a dance number, there are formations that have to be incorporated with others’ formations. “The confidence gained through achievements in dance helps to build social skills, increase self-esteem and the ability to communicate well in a group” (“Why Dance?” par.5). When I was on Heat, a competitive dance team for Yucca Valley, I learned how to work and get along with my teammates which benefited me tremendously. The dance class will be taken by people with similar interests. Students that take the elective have an interest in its syllabus. “Both dance and cheerleading offer vital opportunities for socialization and building camaraderie among people with similar interests” (Davis par.5). According to my survey, about 89% of students at YVHS have an interest in dance (see Graph B). Encouragement and self-esteem are expressed through dancing. Dancing in a class makes students notice others’ strengths and weaknesses, so they can build off of each other. “Dancing offers the potential to accept your own body and revel in its beauty, its movement and rhythm” (Goldstein par.4). A possible career may be discovered. As students take this class, they may find a true passion for dance or dance-related careers. “The entertainment industry is vast, employing an estimated 30,000 in dance related roles in the UK alone” (“Why Dance?” par.4). Dance is a career path that students can strive for to become successful. A dance course needs to be offered to build self-confidence. Students will realize what skills they obtain and what they need to improve. “Learning to dance can help you learn to stop comparisons and dance your own dance. Just as in life in general, it is important to live your own life and not be overly concerned with what others think” (Goldstein par.4). This will help students be more comfortable with themselves and others, which is a significant trait to have in general. Dancing promotes weight loss and supports control of the body. Students can dance to get exercise that helps them control their weight and learn better balance! “Dancing requires a lot of fast movement and good posture, so frequent dancing will help you stabilize and gain better control of your body” (Knight par.8). Dancing has tremendously helped me with my balance as I perform many activities. The personal benefits students gain from dancing supports their lives now and in the future. With the numerous benefits of dancing, a dance course needs to be offered at Yucca
