The first job I obtained with the certificate was working at the local newspaper selling classified ads. I would not have been able to get the job with just a GED. I had no previous knowledge about typing until I took courses in the secretarial program. I was required to keep a cash drawer, accept payments, and bill people. The accounting that I had taken was very helpful. I know my boss was very impressed with the fact my drawer was always balanced. After working at my local paper for about five years, I applied to work at my hometown court house in Leavenworth, Ks.

I did many of the same things as a clerk here but had to learn more about confidential documents and because of my work ethic and history, I was able to move up within a few months to be a courtroom clerk. Being a courtroom clerk was more of an office environment then just being a clerk in the clerk’s office.
