In King's speech, ethos was used the most important. He started his speech off by stating the history of America and then he explained the reason that they were gathering there that day. “Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God’s children…” ( ). King used “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” to reference Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. (269). King used this to start his speech because it was in the the Gettysburg address Lincoln spoke of all men being created equal. He also said “America has given the Negro a bad check, a check which has come back marked ‘insufficient funds.’” ( ). He is using logic as a form of reasoning. He reasons that everyone understands money and that the listener is able to relate to being handed a bad
