One reason that immigrants came to America was to have better jobs and make more money. “A worker in Greece made about five dollars a day, when a worker’s pay in the United States was about thirty dollars a day.” (Document 2) Many immigrants were not making enough money to get by on in their own countries. In America, the jobs were high paying and allowed them to get by. One other reason many immigrants moved to America was to earn a better education for themselves or their children. For example, a Greek immigrant came to the United States because Greece had one college and if a child wanted to go to school, they would have to apply and it would be very difficult to get in. Some people came to America from Ireland because of the Irish famine. The Irish Famine was a long period of hunger and disease. Also many people came because of World War I. …show more content…
One challenge faced were medical inspections. Many immigrants were stopped for hours to pass the medical inspection. It was very difficult for those who were not healthy and were ill. Some were even sent back to the countries they came. Not only did they have to pass the long medical exams but they would also have to be interrogated, meaning that they were asked a great amount of questions. In Document 4, there is a image of the immigration passenger list. The officials at Ellis Island asked their name, age, gender, whether they were married or single, occupation, destination, height, hair color, eye color, and
