These seven men were later indicted on numerous charges ranging from conspiracy, obstruction of justice, lying to the FBI and lying to a grand jury.
The controversial President Richard M. Nixon on his involved in the Watergate scandal still remains a mystery today. The tapes that were uncovered prior to his resignation proved that he certainly had involvement in the cover-up. He was the first, and still is the only President to quit his job. He avoided being impeached and possible prison if it wasn’t for his successor granting him a Presidential pardon.
The American public during that time had a sense of trust in the government prior to Watergate and if it wasn’t for the two reporters that uncovered it, we may have even known about the scandal and the later cover up by the Nixon administration. The nation learned some lessons from Watergate. We need to limit the use and abuse of power by an administration by the use of Checks and Balances. Also, we put in place a system of guidelines to regulate the flow of money into election campaigns. Lastly, maybe in the present day we should remind ourselves as a country about the same types of scandals we see today and use our legislative and judicial branches to bring people to justice, as we did to President Richard
