In social studies, we had already started talking about the Washington D.C. trip. The trip was almost a whole year away. There was no way that I'd be able to pay the fee in time. I wanted to go on the trip so badly. When I had finally accepted that I wouldn't be going on the trip- we were told about a scholarship. The scholarship would pay for the whole trip and only two students in the whole 7th grade would win. I knew the odds weren't very good, but I was willing to give it a shot. I could tell that it was my mom's footsteps by the thud of her shoes. I returned to my homework as the footsteps continued roaming around the house. This time when I looked for the answer that had stumped me earlier, I found it easily. Just when I grabbed my pencil to jot down the answer, my bedroom door opened. It was exactly who I had expected it to be, my mother. She had a look of jubilation on her face.
