Reuters reports that violent crimes including murders fell 4.4 percent in 2013 to their lowest number since the 1970s, continuing a decades-long downturn, according to the FBI. (Simpson, 2014). Programs and policies such as, but not limited to; court supervised community-based outpatient drug treatment and case management services to felony drug offenders, various advocacy interventions which aim to empower women who have experienced intimate partner violence and link them to helpful services in the community, Family functioning interventions which seek to improve life for at risk individuals, and hot spots policing strategies that are used with the police force which focus on small geographic areas or places, usually in urban settings, where crime is concentrated. The fact that the United States leads the industrialized nations in rates of violent crimes is disturbing and points to data availability constraints, ineffective criminal prosecutions and/or investigations, and low references and resources available to not only the victims and their families, but also for "at risk youth" and perpetrators themselves (National Research Council 1993). In addition to limited data availability, there is a big issue with reporting violent crimes and pressing criminal charges against the perpetrators. Prosecution and Conviction Rates for Intimate Partner Violence Journal shows not only the inadequacies of the prosecuting and criminal justice system, but also a major gap in advocating for victims and directing them to appropriate resources.
