When I asked him about the cultural differences between our two countries, he said the main thing that came to mind was how much more laidback in everything was in rural Ukraine. He said that when he was in school, that attendance was not really tracked or even enforced. If he did not go to class then no one batted an eye and vies versa. Apparently the average person in his town would go to work on the farm at 5am and finish up around 6pm. After work they would gather up around town and just drink and socialize. Acceding to him the leading reason for this was that there was nothing else to really do. They had no other real forms of entertainment nearby, and that if you wanted to go to a theater or club you’d be in for a 10-12hour journey to do so. He was also impressed by the number and size of the stores and markets when he came over. In his town they had one market that the call quite literally “The Market”. Everything at “The Market” was from the local community, and was either grown, slathered or hand made in that area. This went for most everything form food, clothes, furniture etc. If you wanted anything that was mass-produced, it would also mean another long trip to a larger city or town. This was about the ownership of firearms. One usually thinks of the U.S as have some of the least restricting firearm laws in the world. But when I asked him about it, the answer was not what I accepted. He did not really know the laws regarding firearm ownership, but he stated that it was very common to see people open carrying a rifle or handgun in town. This was the norm to him so he really never looked deeper into it, and said that “If there are any laws, it’s not as if the government cared about enforcing them in a small farming town”.
