Roscommon. Today I am going to talk about the refugees that have been opposed to come to Ballaghaderreen which is a small town on the Mayo/ Roscommon border. It was said in January that 80 refugees were to be accommodated in a newly refurbished hotel in Ballaghaderreen called the Abbeyfield Hotel. Thereafter, these refugees will be integrated in different communities throughout the Country. Less than twenty-four hours’ notice was given to the town by the Government about this happening. Here are the positives: The population of the little town called Ballaghaderreen will increase in numbers. As said before, there is only about 2000 people living in the town. If 240 refugees are to come into the town in the next few months, this will increase the population by over 10 percent. Another positive is that the town will be put on the map. People who are not from surrounding areas will now know where Ballaghaderreen is. It will bring publicity to the town. By this I mean, RTE will document the progress of the refugees. It will give local shops a bit of a boost if they are shown on the television or if they are talked about or if they are helping some of the refugees. It will give the town a new challenge to work on and will bring hopefully a good change to the town. It’s hard to take in people of a different language and help them settle into a new environment. This will take time for both sides. It brings new life for people especially the refugees but also to the natives of the town. It will bring diversity to the town of Ballaghaderreen. The people of the town will become more educated about the language and customs of the refugees. However, there are a few consequences which can be easily overcome. As Ballaghaderreen is a
