Oscar Munoz was awarded for his efforts over the past year to improve communications with employees and customers. The past year was hard for Oscar Munoz, he had to transform an underachieving airline as he recovered well from a near fatal heart-attack just a few days after starting out as a CEO.

United airlines made an already bad situation worse by responding it had the “right to refuse passengers who are not properly clothed” . This ill-advised comment caused the situation to blow up as thousands of people across the social media joined the outrage. United’s CEO had to apologize for the PR fiasco after he admitted it was a mistake. This was a classic example of how communication can result in negative publicity even though the events leading up to the incident were designed carefully to fulfill a good strategy. The passengers who were denied entry were travelling on a company pass and since they were United employees they were in a way responsible for United’s brand image. It makes sense for united to have rules in place to have employees travelling on company pass to adhere to a certain standard of dressing.
