Annamae was born a slave and became separated from her older brother at the market when she was just a child. She was left with her younger brother who died a few years later. Annamae never had the chance to know her family, learn to read or write, or live a life where she had the ability to make her own decisions without having to submit to a master. However, instead of moping or feeling bad for herself, she would dream about what it would be like when she became free. Her older brother always told her that one day he would get her a Moses Wagon and meet her at the top of Harp Falls, the waterfall that if you can find, you’ll have everlasting joy. Once her and Samantha escape, Annamae does whatever she can to find Harp Falls, and hopefully find her brother. Because of this, in the painting, the waterfall and the rocks surrounding it are dedicated to Annamae. The top of the waterfall represents reaching freedom, but the waterfall in of itself symbolizes different aspects of Annamae’s heart regarding her dream. Within the waterfall, I used several different shades of blue and black in order to create a strong depth. This depth symbolises the deep yearning in her soul to accomplish her dreams and reach freedom. It also shows the depth of the relationship that she creates with the people that are close to her heart. The white that highlights the water correlates to the light that highlights her life: her devoted belief and faith in God, even through all of the trials and tribulations that she’s faced. She’s a stubborn character that will not let anyone sway her beliefs. Because of this, she carries a confidence and a joy that lights up every situation, just like the white paint lights up the dark water. The physical composition of the waterfall is quite rocky, displaying that the path to freedom will not be a smooth trip. There would be
