An obvious sign of type 2 diabetes is weight gain, but for most of the Asian American population, this symptom does not easily appear. Therefore fewer Asian Americans are screened for type 2 diabetes. Since gaining weight is not often an apparent symptom in Asian Americans with type 2 diabetes, many doctors do not associate the other symptoms present to diabetes, and so most of them remains undiagnosed. For instance, Asians with a low BMI might have a similar risk as someone who is not Asian-American with a high BMI.
