In 1789, Haiti contained the largest concentration of slaves in the world. Toussaint fought for the abolition of slavery and became the leader of the black population (former slaves) in Haiti. Him and his army were a major part of the slave revolution. Haiti became impossible for the slave masters and colonialists to control. After Toussaint’s death the slave revolution did not die out. Former slaves and generals turned on France and declared their independence. Napoleon sent troops to Haiti and majority of his troops ultimately perished and Haiti won their independence for a second time in a row. Toussaint’s want for freedom and to no longer be another man’s property caused his impact and what he did. He had been determined to change being owned by someone else and that determination is what caused him to do what he did.
