Preceding this theory was a similar theory of reasoned action by Ajzen and Foshbein (1975, 1980) which stated that when people evaluate the suggested behaviour as positive (attitude), and they think their significant others want them to perform the behaviour (subjective norm), this results in a higher intention (motivations) and they are more likely to do so.
