The main character of the book, Percy “Perseus” Jackson, comes from Perseus, the son of Zeus and his mortal lover Danae. The author used the fact that Perseus was a demigod, and the son of a power god. The word “Olympians” tells you that we have going to discuss famous Greek gods. The most famous god, Zeus will also be a huge part of the story. Then Grover lets out “Blaa-ha-ha!” and Percy asked if he was a goat. As we know Grover couldn’t be a goat since he has the top features of a human, so he has to be a satyrs, which Grover admits later. In Greek mythology, satyrs were half-man and half-horse or goat, satyrs and maenads are followers of Dionysus, credited with the invention of wine. After Percy asked his mother who was after him, Grover said “Just the Lord of the Dead and few of his blood-thirstiest minion.” The allusion “Lord of the Dead” make reference to Hades, the ruler of the underworld. He is not evil but he ruled the underworld and served justice to those that went there. Later in the chapter they finally see what has been chasing them, Percy calls the creature “the bull-man.” In this case “bull-man” refers the Minotaur, a monster that is bull with a human head. In Greek mythology you hear the story about Theseus and the Minotaur, where Theseus kill the Minotaur in the maze.
Mr. D in chapter 5 is an allusion of Dionysus. Dionysus is the god of wine and ecstasy.
