Macbeth, a tragedy play written by William Shakespeare interprets the questions of whether Macbeth is a tragic victim of the fates or a corrupt man who deserved his death. Macbeth Retold, a BBC production version written by Peter Moffatt follows a similar plot but has been adapted and changed to a more modern and current setting. Both versions contain parallel and universal themes such as ambition and guilt that are related to each other yet there are subtle differences in concerning matters such as purpose and context.

In the beginning of the film, Macbeth is standing in the kitchen with a magnetic knife holder being place behind him. This can be said for the introduction of Macbeth as a character of high authority and power as the knife looks as it forms a crown around his head. In Both Macbeth and Macbeth Retold, after hearing the prophecy of his rise to power, Macbeth becomes hungry for the role even though the kingship is not his right.
Respect can also be said to present Macbeth’s ambition as this word is the key to understand Macbeth Retold. Respect translates not only the art of cooking but also the animals that become the food Macbeth prepares. The reason for Macbeth’s delusions and madness is that there is no respect in Duncan’s death. The collision of his desire to have the prestige Duncan has caused hallucination leading to ambition.

The last time the milk bottle is seen is after the murder. When Macbeth has pulled the bottle away, he imagined blood to be on the bottle of the milk, his mouth, and his hand. A bottle of milk sits in between a beer when Macbeth is setting up the murder of Banquo.
