Some days, dreaming of the past is easier than living in the present. “Almost Home” is co-written and recorded by American country music singer Craig Morgan. This was the first top ten hit on the US country music charts for Morgan. He also received a Song of the Year award and earned a Songwriter’s Achievement Award from the Nashville Songwriters' Association International. “Almost Home” explores the struggles of homelessness, the complexities that life brings us, and the freedom to dream.
This emotional song starts out as the narrator finds a man, “curled up behind some garbage cans” (Craig Morgan, Almost Home 6). He is using only newspapers and some old wool socks to keep out the freezing rain and bitter cold. It is amazing this man was still alive despite all the conditions surrounding him, and the fact that he was certainly not prepared to be in this weather. We can gather from this that it was the last time he had good and enjoyable time with his family, and that is probably why he reverts to it so often. This seems to be the his way of trying to be there in the moment again, or to bring it back somehow and this allows him to not feel so lonely. When the man in this song dreams it gives him a sort of independence, and freedom that allows him to live the life he wishes he had.
As the homeless gentleman continues to dream and return to the past, to the good old days, where he did not have a worry in the world, he spends it dreaming of what seems to be his ideal day:
