The obvious theme present in Hunters in the Snow is hunting. To hunt is to chase or search for the purpose of catching or killing, and that is what Frank did. Three “friends” Frank, Kenny, and Tub went on a hunting trip, but the hunters ended up being the hunted. Frank used Kenny to hunt Tub, who then hunted Kenny. Frank is a manipulative man, who wants the best outcome for himself and will do anything, even if a death of a friend is a result of it. Kenny did anything and everything to make sure Tub was the outsider in this hunting trip. Frank did not stop him, because he knew that Tub would put an end to it one way or another. Frank then made an interesting comment when there was no sign of deer that made the story take a turn. “It isn’t the deer” Frank said “It’s the hunting. There are all these forces out here and you have to go with them” (Wolff 30). Frank hinted at the fact that he wanted something more to happen other than killing deer. Kenny began to shoot everything that he hated. Kenny then turned to Tub and told him that he hated him, but before Kenny could shoot, Tub shot first. Once Tub shot Kenny, the roles of the hunter and the hunted switched. Frank’s job was complete when Tub’s bullet left the chamber, and then Frank had Tub all to himself. Just as Tub thought he was out of the woods with Kenny, Frank was still trailing close
