According to the American Association of Community Theatre “Lighting Designer” piece, the most basic function of stage lighting is to make the actors and their environment visible to the audience. But continuing on in the article, it is so much more than that. Lighting reinforces the style of the production, blends the visual element on stage into a unified whole, and evokes the appropriate mood. It is so easy to question how light can cause the change of emotion in an environment, in a show, or even in a person. But when the slightest glimpse of a sunrise or sunset causes the faintest smile or a warming feeling, it’s evident. The movement of light is said to offer a kind of flexible expressiveness that is unmatched by any of the other visual elements of production, as well as color in lighting. The American association of Community Theatre states that direct lighting is used on definite location, illuminating specific areas while indirect lighting is used over the entirety of an area and doesn’t appear to come from a specific location. Direct lighting can cause dramatic shadows over an actor or object bringing to notice its significance.
