The Yellow Wallpaper takes place in 1892, near the end of the 19th century. During this time woman were treated far less than human. their role was to stay home and listen to whatever the husband says. The top cause of death for women at this time, because of this, was childbirth. the woman in The Yellow Wallpaper seemed to go insane because of this supposed uselessness, but when her husband told her that nothing was actually wrong with her and she was fine, she felt she was trapped and needed to be free.
