The protagonists in the stories both change their community significantly. In “The Smallest Dragonboy”, the text states, “... the smallest dragonboy and the hatchling who wouldn’t choose anybody else, walked out of the Hatching ground together forever”(10). This quote refers to a boy named K’van who was tiny and was bullied, but in the end, K’van got chosen by the bronze dragon, the dragon everybody admires. K’van sets an example for the people of Pern. He proves to Pern that no matter how small you are, you can achieve your dreams. According to How to Train Your Dragon, Wilhite writes, “Together the newly befriended training dragons and their former opponents fly to the warriors’(and Toothless’)rescue”(Wilhite). …show more content…
In Pern, the setting of the “Smallest Dragonboy”, humans and dragons are friends. For example, K’van imagines in his head , “...to be a dragonrider…to be his friend, in telepathic communion with him for life…”(2). In Pern, the dragons are like family to the humans. The humans and dragons are lifetime companions. However, in the land of the Vikings, Vikings and Dragons are not very friendly to each other. In How to Train Your Dragon, the scene starts with, “Fire-spitting dragons attack the town as Viking warriors mount…”(Wilhite). Given this quote, you can see that the Vikings and the dragons are in a war because of the dragons stealing their livestock. While Pern is in love with dragons, the Vikings and dragons are sworn enemies who become friends only after Hiccup after the war
