The disadvantage that children face each in the areas where drug trafficking prevalent is age, inexperience, and lack of opportunity, places them in a dangerous situation when it comes to the narcotics trade. Drug Traffickers have long been employing children as lookouts and drug runners. Brazil’s current children protective statutes clearly states that individuals under the age of 18 cannot be apprehended, detained, or arrested unless caught in the criminal act, they are often the target recruits for the lowest rung in the drug trade: these youths are often killed while working as neighborhood watches, making deliveries or running errands. A strong social movement is needed to help turn around the drug and crime problems in the Favelas and in Brazil in general. A large tract of money has been set aside to help improve the conditions in the favelas but there will always be doubts by the citizens especially knowing how corrupted the police are. As for fighting the trafficking, a lot rides on the international control, knowing that Brazil is one of the major drug transit countries. Drugs will continue to be brought wherever there is availability and demand. There is some hope that governments will commence to work together and stop the drug trafficking in the communities where the people do not want to part of the drug problem. With the upcoming World Cup and the Summer Olympics taking place, Brazil has started to police and clean up its cities. BOPE is a specially trained military force, has been training and going into the Favelas to cleanse them. The BOPE are cleaning out the drug cartels and the crime associated with them, while enforcing a strong military presence which is necessary to maintain a safe and secure atmosphere for these types of events. The government of Brazil must take several steps towards trying to affect change within the favelas and the drug trafficking in general.
