Navy in the late 1880’s paid out handsomely for the United States. The U.S. death toll reached nearly fifty five hundred, with the majority of deaths due to food poisoning. The Treaty of Paris marked the end of the Spanish American War and brought independence to Cubans. The independence also brought on the Platt amendment of 1901, which was put into the new Cuban constitution after the war. It stated that the U.S. had the right to intervene for the preservation of Cuban independence and the maintenance of a government. Cubans protested and voted against the amendment, but were eventually forced to adopt it after the U.S. military intervened three months later.
