Currently, each state’s number of electors is decided by their population. I would alter the system so that each state had equal representation. Every state would only have ten electors. These electors would vote based on the way the general populus would vote in each state. With equal representation, each state would be equally important during the election. Now, swing states are non-existent and no few groups of people run everything. The rural states have just as much say as the larger population ones. People in those larger states may not be as supportive of this part of the plan, due to the fact that it strips them of some of the power that they have become accustomed to, however this is a necessary step towards making the electoral college a properly functioning system, rather than the broken dumpster fire that it is now. Another addition to the proportional plan that I would make is a binding clause in the constitution. A binding clause is a portion of the constitution that would make every elector be required to vote the way their state votes. Currently that is not a requirement. Electors were originally expected to vote with their conscience. This was because the founders didn’t trust an uneducated voter, to make proper decisions about their leaders that would not end the country. However, now people are far more informed about the issues as well as the candidates. The only real problem with what the populace knows about candidates is that nearly all of the news that we ingest is from a biased source, whether it be right leaning or left
