The government also has to make laws to protect its people. In this case laws are put in place to prevent against dangerous things which means they are not allowed to run wild or else they will have to deal with the laws put in place by the government. In today’s society many feel that weed should be legalized. Many states have placed laws that have legalized marijuana. When looked at the issue closely, how is drinking alcohol any different from smoking weed? One is legal for people over 21, and the other is against the law. Who is able to decide whether this should be legal or illegal? In a democracy the people should be able to decide this. More and more people are being put in jail for possession of marijuana than ever before. “We are not to supposed to have to worry about searches and seizures, yet under the marijuana laws, the government conducts searches all the time on the slightest of evidence” . This is a classic example of our freedoms being encroached upon. Our basic rights are being bent to comply with something that will in fact hurt the people it is meant to protect. A law is meant to protect the people. The standard of a good law should be whether it hurts or harms its own people. The 2nd amendment is one of the same topics as marijuana. There have recently been threats of the government taking guns from the people it governs. The 2nd amendment says that the people have the right to bear arms. With all of the recent violence and shootings there is cause for concern with who is coming across these firearms. Background checks have become more common to ensure that the owner of the firearm will be a responsible owner, but if someone really needs a gun they will find a way to get their hands on it. In the same sense if the United States were to come under attack there is one more source of defense, but in today’s age of nuclear warfare that
