Throughout history, women have continuously been the victims of discrimination and sexism. During the Renaissance Era, which lasted from the fourteenth century to the sixteenth, things were no different. Although the Renaissance was supposed to be a time of “rebirth” and improvement in society,women did not experience these positive effects due to their treatment and society’s unfair expectations.
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth during the fall of the middle ages and the early dawn of the modern era. The life as a young girl during the Renaissance period was generally planned out by their families. Young girls lived with their parents until they married, which generally happened in their teens(Simpson 6). In the home young girls would learn how to take care of livestock, use plants to make medicines, cook and clean. Those skills are skills they would need as wives(Simpson 5). Most wealthy girls were engaged by three or four due to their parents contract. Once the contract was made it was set in stone. If a young girl married someone their parents did not choose the marriage was illegal(Simpson 14). Wealthy families tried to marry their daughters into royal families. They should have had the right to chose who they wanted to have and raise children with. Then once a young woman married, she had many duties as a wife and a mother. As a wife in the Renaissance they had to discipline the children, keep the house clean, educate the children and servants, and tend to the business or farm.(Thomson and Dean 14). While the women were at home keeping the family together their husbands were out on the town participating in new ideas and customs. The working class during the Renaissance were predominantly men. Women also participated in jobs with their husbands, but never got the recognition or credit. Being a women in the lower class was not the ideal life. They spent their lives under the rule of men, first their fathers then their husbands. Lower class women worked as servants for five to ten years before they could get married. As a wife and mother women had too many responsibilities during the Renaissance, cooking, cleaning, educating, farming and holding the family together was just the half of it.
