In the beginning, Ponyboy was just leaving the movie theater and began walking home. While Ponyboy was walking, suddenly he saw a group of Socs coming up behind him, knowing that the Socs would jump the Greasers at any given moment. The Socs began antagonizing him, when his gang came to help. The Socs soon left him and the rest of the Greasers alone. Darry helping him up and asking "Are you all right, Ponyboy?"(6). Darry taking the time to make sure Ponyboy was ok and had not been hurt too seriously showed how much he cares and the bond that they have.

The boys did not want to keep being involved with fights but it was the only way they had know how to survive and get any kind of respect. Most of the Greasers did not want to participate in the “rumble” because they were tired of people always getting hurt for no reasons. Most of Ponyboy’s gang ended up fighting in this and teaming up with another gang to take on the Socs. The Greasers wanted nothing else but to win the rumble, which they managed to do. The first thing they couldn’t wait to do was to tell Johnny that they had won. When they got to the hospital they learned that Johnny was not doing good and the doctor once again would not let the boys in, but didn’t end up so well with what the Gang had said "We're gonna see him and if you give me any static you'll end up on your own operatin' table"(147).
