Developing an alternative perspective regarding diversity, has allowed me to gain a better understanding of my interview with Lester. Societal trends similar to that of the Newark Riots are still occurring today and affecting so many people that will share experiences and stories to that of Lester. One of the most significant societal trends has been police brutality, especially of unarmed African Americans. The Newark Riots began with the brutality that John Smith experienced at the hands of the Newark Police department. In 2014, nearly 47 years later, riots broke out in Ferguson, Missouri after police fatally shot Michael Brown. Looting and vandalism occurred, leading to the ever growing Black Lives Matter movement. Black Lives Matter advocates against racial profiling, racism, and police brutality. Protesters have been able to come together to uphold their role in fighting for human rights and social justice.
The cycle of marginalization will continue to repeat if more members of society refuse to take a stand against injustice. Upholding human rights and social justice have been enforced by movements like Black Lives Matter, especially regarding the lives lost of Yvette Smith, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice. The societal breakdown leading up to the riots and protests and the aftermath have significant impacts to the citizens and society as a whole.
