It started to become an addiction, and I was on Facebook everyday. Instagram came out and was the next big thing. Because Instagram was only posting pictures with a caption, I felt that I attracted to it more than Facebook because with pictures I knew I had so many interesting ones that people would appeal to. During my late high school years, Snapchat came next which is my favorite source of social media. Recently I realized how I wasn’t using social media for its true purpose. I used social media to impress others, to boast about the amazing things that I was doing, to lust after what others had; Instead I should have been using social media for the glory of God. Every morning I woke up, the first thing I did was check my social media instead of connecting with God through prayer. For someone as spiritual as myself, social media became my idol. See I began to have a better understanding of purpose. I no longer wanted what others had that I had seen on social media but I started to value and appreciate the things that I had. The negative outcomes of social media are FOMO. FOMO is a term used that is translated to “fear of missing out”. “FOMO is a relatively new concept where people are concerned that others may be having more fun and rewarding experiences than them. It is characterized as the desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing” (The Washington Post). Social media is one of the best ways to experience FOMO. We are so worried about missing out on our friends lives when in reality we can just give them a phone call and talk to them. Another negative outcome to not having social media is getting the news late. Social media is the fastest way to get instant news about athletics, celebrity, or breaking news.
