An unknown man jumps off of the highest tower in Florence, Italy. Before jumping he thinks about his last gift to humanity and being remembered as a hero for his actions. Meanwhile Robert Langdon wakes up in a hospital bed in Florence with a gunshot wound and amnesia. Agent Vayentha from the Consortium, a private organization which fabricates articles and events to the liking of their clients, comes to the hospital to kill Langdon. Fortunately, doctor Sienna Brooks helps Langdon escape and they take a taxi back to her apartment with agent Vayentha following them closely. Meanwhile, on a boat off the coast of Italy, the head of the Consortium is worrying about Vayentha and Langdon’s knowledge of their job assignment: to release a video to the news explaining the Inferno and to retrieve a small tube from a deposit box--which is currently missing. At Brooks’ apartment, they discover a small tube sewn into Langdon’s jacket which can only be opened by Langdon’s thumb print. After he opens the “capsule” an image is projected of Botticelli “Hell Map” which is a part of Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. Langdon notices that the image has been altered and a phrase, “Truth can only be seen through the eyes of death”, has been added.
