Grabe and Hyde hypothesis, “music video consumption will be positively associated with self-objectification, which will, in turn, be related to a host of negative psychological consequences that result when girls observe women’s bodies being presented in a narrow range of roles that undermine their confidence by valuing them as nothing more than sex objects” (Grabe & Hyde, 2009). Their results show that the more T.V. consumed is positively related to self-objectification in adolescent girls and negatively effects their self-esteem, dieting patterns, and emotional health risks. 5th to 12th graders are at more risk for health risk because they are at a stage in life where they are discovering their self-image and if it doesn’t meet society’s standards then they experience teasing and pressure to ‘fix’ yourself. When a girl or boy feel this need to fix themselves, they are going to be depressed and use extreme measures to have this ‘ideal’ beauty. Being a depressed adolescent can cause them to not want to go to school, lowering grades, antisocial, and in severe cases suicidal. An adolescent may have suicidal behaviors because they are getting teased by peers, depressive thoughts on their self-image, and lack of support. Being depressed about your self-image can also lead to negative eating behaviors. Many adolescences experience some sort of dieting behavior to lose weight, extreme exercise without eating much is unhealthy because it can cause fainting or other health problems. Anorexia and bulimia are more common among adolescent girls than boys, many girls think this is a fast way to obtain societies beauty image, but it is extremely health risky. Those who are anorexic or bulimic can develop many health issues and have may develop psychological issues. There needs to be action taken to stop extreme behavioral changes that result from low self-image. Adolescent girls and boys need to be aware that America’s ideal
